Exclusive sneak peek: Bored to Death

by our first guest blogger, Xander Singh

Bored to Death is the newest product of HBO's line of witty comedies. An unlikely trinity of comedic actors paired with a great story line proves Bored to Death to be one of the most promising new shows premiering this fall.

If HBO is known for one thing pertaining to the shows, it is the great writing. Strangely enough, this is what the show seems to lack. A mildly interesting plot based around Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) losing his girlfriend because of his habits of engulfing white wine out of a coffee cup and dabbling with his one hitter every now an then, forces him to put his failed writing career onto the back burner in favor of becoming a craigslist private detective.

The dialogue is fair and the situations are a bit less than thrilling, though the performances delivered by the Schwartzman and Co. are enough to keep the lifeblood of the show alive. Ted Danson plays Ames' colorful boss stuck in the doldrums of a typical lifestyle, trying to find his youth by begging Ames' for adventure and weed. The newest overweight funny man in the film and television industry, Zach Galifianakis, plays Ames' sex deprived friend who can only think about how to bed his new girlfriend.

The meager writing in this show is bravely masked by the talents of these three men to the point that I didn't even realize it until I started to write this review. I will certainly keep watching it, and so should you.

Bored to Death premieres Sunday, Sept 20th after Curb your Enthusiasm. Unless you plan on going to bed at 9.30, give this show a chance.

[thanks Xander! let's go to Astro's for some pie now.]
