this week: America's Next Top Model - cycle 14 premiere!
I've said it once and I'll say it again: I love America's Next Top Model.
Cycle 14 kicked off on Wednesday night and it's always entertaining to see what silly theme Tyra has picked out for the cycle. This time it's a "social network" called myfiercepage.com Tyra tries. I let it slide.
I don't think I'll recap every model or moment, but I just want to say my favorite and least favorite girl so far. Here's a clip of Hallie, my least favorite. (In my notes from the episode I wrote: "Hi Hallie. You suck.") A trust fund baby, and basically a total bitch... I'm glad Tyra let her go!
And my favorite model of the week... is Gabrielle. Jay said he was impressed with her knowledge of the industry, and I must agree! She really stood out for me. (Also, I think big, curly hair is making a comeback.)

Guest Blogger: Angela's take on American Idol - top 16 results
Based on the bitter yet vague tweets I read from East Coast viewers earlier in the evening, I had a bad feeling going into the top 16 results show (even though I had been looking forward to Matt Giraud’s performance all week). At the top of the broadcast Ryan Seacrest said we “could be in for a surprise or two,” which is never a good sign.
But first let’s start with the positives: the group performance of Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” at the beginning of the show was quite enjoyable, by far the best group song of the season. I’m going to try to find that mp3 online somewhere (the group performances aren’t available on iTunes). Another positive: Matt Giraud’s performance (was there someone else on stage?). “Tell Her About It” was one of my favorite parts of the AI8 tour last summer, and I loved seeing/hearing it one more time. It was only a matter of time before Matty G jumped off his piano bench! I could watch him play all day and night. Why on Earth doesn’t he have a record contract yet?! His duet with Anna Wilson “You Don’t Know Me” is beautiful. Check it out on iTunes ASAP.
As for this year’s contestants, I’m THRILLED that Didi, Casey, and Andrew made it to the top 12. I was worried for them over the past few weeks because of the judges’ inconsistent reviews, but I’ve been vocal about them being a few of my favorites and I’m very happy they’re sticking around.
However, I’m very disappointed in some of the other results. The first (and biggest IMO) shocker of the night was Katelyn’s elimination. I thought she was incredibly likable and talented, and despite a lackluster performance this week, I thought she’d be safe for sure. It’s a travesty that Paige made it and Katelyn didn’t. I’m sure I could hear my brother swearing from 300 miles away. Then Todrick was eliminated. He was one of my early favorites, had a few shaky weeks, but came back strong. He has a great voice and great stage presence. People must not have liked his personality because he certainly has the talent. He even nailed his sing off performance after he was eliminated! This won’t be the last we’ve seen of Todrick.
Alex and Lilly’s eliminations were also disappointing but not shocking. Alex made progress over the past few weeks, but the kid is like a deer in headlights. With a little experience and confidence, he could be amazing. This just wasn’t the right time for him. I do wish he had stayed over Aaron or Tim though. His voice is much more interesting and effortless than theirs. While Lilly was never one of my favorites, I’m sure her elimination shocked many people. There’s no denying that she’s talented, certainly more talented than many of the contestants who made it to the top 12, but I guess she just didn’t connect with the audience. She was also fighting an uphill battle by not getting any exposure on the early episodes of the show. Double whammy.
So here we have it, the AI9 top 12: Didi, Crystal, Lacey, Lee, Andrew, Casey, Aaron, Michael, Siobhan, Paige, Katie, and Tim. Ten of those twelve will be going on tour. Yikes. I can think of 3 that I’d get rid of right now. In fact, why don’t we just cut it down to the top 6 and save ourselves the next month of torturous performances. Already the Rolling Stones theme for next week is a disaster waiting to happen. Get your earplugs ready, America.

Guest Blogger: Angela on American Idol - top 8 guys
Will the guys step up and really fight to earn a spot in the top 12? Or will they underwhelm like many of the ladies did the night before? Here’s how I evaluated their performances:
Andrew – “Genie in a Bottle” – Brilliant! This was his best performance since “Straight Up” during Hollywood week. I think he messed up the first lines though. Isn’t it, “I feel like I’ve been locked up tight for a century of lonely nights”?
Casey – “Think of Me” – I definitely like stripped down, acoustic Casey better than rocker Casey. He has more control of his voice when he’s playing a slower song. I like his hair in a ponytail too; it looks more natural.
Todrick – “Somebody to Love” – Great song choice! The opening was too high for him, but I loved the rest.
Mike – “This Woman’s Work” – I’m not a Maxwell fan and don’t like the song at all, but Mike’s voice sounded good. He definitely showed a different side of himself.
Lee – “Fireflies” – The beginning was nasally, but once he got to the chorus and picked up the tempo it sounded okay. I like Lee’s rockier version better than the original.
Alex – “Trouble” – I really like the tone of his voice. This performance didn’t have any personality, but he sounded good.
Tim – “Halleluiah” – This song will always remind me of Jason Castro in season 7. Tim’s version paled by comparison.
Aaron – “I’m Already There” – The beginning was really rough. He didn’t find the melody until the chorus. The song is too big for him, and he was trying too hard.
While nothing moved me to tears (really Kara?), I think the guys definitely stepped up and put on a show. You could tell they were “in it to win it” as Randy says. I’m really not sure who will be going home.
Personally I think Aaron and Tim should go, but I suspect they get lots of teenage girls’ votes because of their “aw shucks” attitudes. Same with Alex. As much as I hate to say it, Casey might be in danger because of his understated performance. This is a tough call. As will the ladies the night before, it just might come down to who the audience likes more (or less) rather than overall talent or individual performances.
