what to watch tonight: Thursday the 18th.
I went to a Valentine's mixer on Saturday night at my friend Amanda's new place. Amongst the pink heart shaped cookies, pomegranate cocktails, and love mix cds, there was a tattoo artist set up in the craft room. Tattoos for tips at a party. Yes, that's what the kids do in L.A. these days. So to all my newly inked friends, TLC has you in mind. LA Ink premieres tonight, if you can manage to squeeze it in with the million other wonderful shows on.

Last Night: Project Runway "Back to New York"
From the tweets and status updates I've seen, it seems that most people who watched Project Runway last night did so because their DVR picked it up for them. No one seemed to know the show was coming back, myself included. I only found out last Friday while driving home from LAX... Lifetime has a giant billboard over downtown L.A. "Oh! Project Runway is starting?! ...and it's in NYC again?! Cool! I think I will like that better. The L.A. season was boring!"
It's true. After last season, the only reason for watching last night was for my loyalty to Heidi and Tim. And Christian and Santino. And Uli. And Daniel V. And Michael Kors. And Nina. All the greats. They're the reason I loved Project Runway. Oh, and of course... New York City. So, that being said, I had to give it another shot. Last year's transition to Lifetime was a messy one; it broke the spirit of the show for everyone I think. But this is a new year: 2010 - Runway back in New York. Even though we don't get our beautiful Bravo graphics surrounding it, (I definitely hit play when I saw a Bravo promo last night, just out of habit, thinking the show was about to start. Wonderful placement everyone!), I'm feeling better about this season already.
It feels good to be back at the Atlas. And the cast already seems much more interesting. I loved how they went about introducing everyone, up on the roof, having them describe their style. It was a good way to set the tone, and lead us into the first challenge. The designers seem like a very serious bunch, forward thinking and very passionate about fashion, texture, shapes, color. Plus, a lot of them are just great looking characters. "High 5 for bangs!"
To start off the first challenge, they had a 3 minute dash for fabric in the park. My favorite, Ping, "got all the ugliest fabrics", but I still felt good about rooting for her. She's a physical therapist and a designer from Taiwan. Really can't go wrong there. Love her.
So the designers attempted to create their "this is me" looks. Tim went around the room and gave his usual critiquing. Some designers listened, and others did not. They'll learn.
So far Janeane is the most annoying - what a cry baby. And that's a bummer because she is Leanne's friend. And I loved Leanne. (click to read her blog post about Janeane.) But tears aside, Janeane was impressive. She started all over 2 hours before time was up and created a really cute every day outfit that I would love to wear.
The other surprise: Emilio Sosa and his adorable dress. He went from being not even close to finished - and with a very confusing looking project on his hands - to winning the challenge. His dress was so cute. Guest host Nicole Richie loved it too.
The first episode was a successful one in my book. The cast is great, the challenge was interesting, the time constraints kept me on the edge of my couch. Unlike last season I was actually excited to see the final products, and didn't get up to clean my kitchen mid show.
It's gotta be the worst to get kicked off first on Project Runway, but what's even worse is getting kicked off my TiVo season pass list after your first episode. Tim and Heidi, you'll be happy to know, you're IN.

what to watch tonight: Thursday the 14th.
It's my favorite night of the week. NBC's Thursday night line-up is always great... until late night that is - Poor Conan - and Poor Leno - why did NBC have to go about this in such a horrible manner?? Anyway! It's definitely time for some new 30 Rock. (Also, look out for the SNL promos; I saw a really funny one last night touching on the Leno/Conan war.) ABC has new episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. I'm not so into those shows anymore.. but if you watch, please let me know how it's going! More exciting... Project Runway starts tonight on Lifetime. This time they're giving NYC a shot. Hopefully it's better than the L.A. attempt last fall. I really want to like it. I do. And last but not least, after Real Housewives of Orange County, our favorite guy, Andy Cohen is back with his Watch What Happens Live show on Bravo at midnight. I hope he comments on the fact that we are watching his show and NOT some other people's. Ha. Mazel. Have a great night everyone!

Tonight: Launch My Line
It's been 3 weeks with Bravo's "new hit" Launch My Line. I wanted to give it a chance; I really wanted to like it. But after 3 weeks, I've gotta say what I said after week 1: it's not Project Runway.
I feel like it's probably a pretty obvious comparison, but who are we kidding? It's a show about fashion, with a work room, designers (and experts), gay men giving advice, and a runway finish each week that chooses the best and the worst designs. Sounds familiar. Sounds very familiar. (like the Russ that Rachel dates after Ross on Friends.)
When Project Runway started, it was very edgy. Cool shots of New York City... A behind the scenes look at what it takes to start a fashion line that matters. We saw the sweat that went into the creation of, as Tim would say, very fashion forward pieces. It was aspirational. If the designers were impressive, we looked forward to rooting for them each week. If the designers were terrible, we looked forward to Heidi's "auf wiedersehen." The casting was brilliant in those first seasons. "What happened to Andre??" - still a favorite quotable moment. And Tim was always so charming.
So what happened [to Project Runway]? Well this year, I personally couldn't grasp watching Tim and Heidi all packaged up in Lifetime wrapping. The red carpet stuff was very lame. The voice in all of the promos was misplaced. Nothing about watching Lifetime felt right. And the show itself didn't feel the same. Leaving NYC to bring the work room to L.A. made Project Runway feel like a TV show. Now instead of getting a glimpse at passionate designers struggling to make something new and different, we watched three average Janes make clothes in front of a camera. The challenges started slipping a couple seasons back when the product placement settled in. But even more, with movie themed fashion challenges on Lifetime, (I hate to say it but..) Project Runway lost it's mojo. In it's prime [on Bravo], Project Runway, was my favorite show - We all have our favorite shows. But at some point, the idea gets tired, or the characters get married, whatever it is, time goes by, and we have to move on [to Launch My Line].
This time around, Launch My Line (like The Fashion Show) feels like a TV show. It's the same formula with a little bit of a twist. This time around we have a group of people who have had very successful careers in different areas, but now think that they deserve a fashion line. (And they've been paired with experts who will do all the actual construction for them.) I feel like the concept lacks passion, as well as inspiration. The "designers" don't really know what they're doing. (However, in their defense, the rules and the challenges kind of suck. They had to pick out all of their fabric the first week, and I feel that telling them what type of piece to make every week doesn't really let them design much of anything. Very odd.) Also, the strange set up has been cast with a much older group than [that other show] ever had. Sigh. I don't believe that I'm the only one feeling like I just want to see struggling designers who really want to make it. These "designers" have had other jobs. When they get auf'd - oops, I mean - when their line gets dropped, they've still got a way to pay the bills. They don't need to look up to D-squared like Christian needed to look up to Tim. And there's no fun in that!
Let's end on a positive note. Launch My Line has it's watchable points. Not being Project Runway, these designers and their experts are trying to make one cohesive line. It's interesting to look at what they've put together thus far all in one rack, and to decide if they are staying focused. I have trouble with the fact that each challenge is steering the look, and the line. (As well as finding anyone I really like.) But I'll give it another shot next week. For now, as D-squared said, "Interesting doesn't always mean fabulous."

Tonight: Project Runway "Lights, Camera, Sew!"
I haven't actually remembered to watch Project Runway since it premiered over a month ago. I guess that's what happens when it's not on a channel I regularly watch. (However, years ago, Project Runway was the show that brought me to Bravo. What's changed? Hm.) Lifetime dislike aside, let's try to get into this.
This week's episode is all about movies. Designers chose between Film Noir, Action Adventure, Period Piece, Western, and Science Fiction as their inspirations for their designs. They have to invent a character and the outfit to go with it. And the kicker is, it's a one day challenge. So far, we're set up for a pretty decent competition reality episode. But costumes? Really? This is the completely opposite of fashion forward! Where's Chris March when we need him?
At the Runway.
Irina Shabayeva - Film Noir. hot model. decent dress. overall look was good.
Carol Hanna Whitfield - Action Adventure... super hero slut?
Shirin Askari - Western.. just pretty much western.
Christopher Straub - period piece... i like this one... fashion forward -- creative story too
Nicolas Putvinski - sci-fi, white dress, ice villian or something. eh. -- evil queen. got a well done.
Althea Harper - film noir... -- damn. they ripped her a new one. boring. cheap.
Ra'Mon Lawrence - sci-fi... green metallic... reminds me of the cross dressing challenge.... eh... the judges let him down easy
Louise Black - film noir... as she said, not as show stopping... ready to wear
Epperson - western.. pretty intense and shows strength.
Gordana Gehlhausen - period piece.. super cute.. right on mark. -- but not bringing anything new.
Logan Neitzel - action adventure.... of the future? not tight enough!
home sewn mess. :(

Tonight: Project Runway
i'm watching Project Runway 413 solo tonight. And it's impossible not to comment. Thank goodness for blogging.
I love Christian.
I love his dancing moves.
I love his tiny little apartment.
I love the way he says fabulous.
I love his confidence.
Jillian... is growing on me by the seconds.
(I mean.. I already loved her.. but... now I really want to cheer for her.)
Might sound strange, but I sort of believe the whole psychic prediction that her mom raised her believing. Maybe I should go see a psychic. I think I may have reached a point in my life that I'd be okay with knowing what there is to know. Hm...
Rami - I don't know. He didn't drape (much). I guess that's admirable.
Chris - human hair? no. no. no.
I think it's funny that they put Rami and Chris in the same hotel room. Ha. Ha. ........I guess it's not that funny.
I really want to attend a little cocktail party at dusk on a rooftop in New York City. I want Christian and Jillian to be there. And maybe Andre too. (What happened to Andre??) Everyone will drink and laugh and drink some more.
Oh and I want to have a intercom at my next apartment.. and Tim Gunn will buzz in and say, "Melanie, it's Tim Gunn." I can't wait.
Talk about a
wow moment.
Auf Wiedersehen rewind: ..did Chris just try to kiss Rami??
